When you first decide to apply for naturalization, you may not know what to expect. This process may seem overwhelming to someone looking to live permanently in the United States.

Foreign nationals typically need to go through a multistep process in order to become full citizens. Once you obtain citizenship, you have the right to vote and access certain jobs, such as holding public office.

Gather the proper documents

According to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, you must be at least eighteen years of age to apply. Collecting all the documents you need, as well as taking a passport-ready photo, are some of the first and most important steps to this process.

After that, you can download the naturalization application to formally apply. Take your time double-checking your work and your personal information. Once you finish, you should officially file your application as well as pay the fee needed for the biometric test.

Go to the appointment

Biometrics typically include personal items such as photographs and fingerprints. These pieces of information help verify that you are who you claim to be. Sometime after filing your papers, you may get an official notice to attend an appointment. Bring the notice card with you, along with a valid driver’s license or passport.

You should collect and keep all documents you get along the way, including your Permanent Resident Card. Getting study booklets for the civics test you will take sometime later on is another important part of this visit. Naturalization may appear confusing at first, but it is not as intimidating as it seems with some preparation.
